Isabel port

Port Isabel (until in 1928 names Point Isabel ) is a locality of the county of Cameron in the state of the Texas to the the United States. It counted 4.865 inhabitants in 2000.

Geography

Port Isabel is located at (26.073675, -97.213234), on the Gulf of Mexico.

History

The first community of this area, Brazos Santiago, was close to Brazos Island. In 1788 of the water merchants cross this territory in the search of fresh water. It is told that Jean Lafitte had a puit with a few kilometers in the North-West of Isabel Port.

In the years a 1830 small community develops in this place, known under the name of El Frontón de Santa Isabel which will become later Punta de Santa Isabel , which means in English Point Isabel (Isabelle Point).

  • 1845 : In June, a post office serves the community under the name of Point Isabel.

  • 1849 : The name of the post office and the community is changed into Brazos Santiago.
  • 1849 : An epidemic of Choléra bursts.
  • 1850 : Port Isabel is the second locality of the area.
  • 1853 : The headlight of Isabel Port is built.
  • 1859 : 10 million cotton dollars is dispatched each year since the port.
  • 1863 : All the boats of the port are destroyed or captured at the time of an attack of the Union, on May 30th.
  • 1872 : The railroad of the Rio Grande Valley Railway connects Port Isabel to Brownsville.
  • 1881 : The name of the Post Office is changed into Isabel
  • 1904: The city has a school cash 2 teachers and 81 pupils.
  • 1915 : The city becomes officially Point Isabel.
  • 1928 : The city is built-under the name of Port Isabel on March 23rd.
  • 1929 : The population reaches 750 inhabitants.
  • 1930 : The post office changes name for Port Isabel.
  • 1933 : The channel is dredged with a 3,60 m depth over a width of 37,50 Mr. This year the population is of 1 ' 177 inhabitants.
  • 1935 : July 27th marks the first modern use of Isabel Port like seaport.
  • 1937 : A channel of 1,80 m is open of Isabel Port to a point located at 3 km of Harlingen.
  • 1941 : The railroad Port Isabel and Rio Grande sells its ways connecting Port Isabel has Brownsville with the St Louis, Brownsville and Mexico City Railway .
  • 1942 : The channel connecting Port Isabel to Harlingen was ensablé, it is not used more.
  • 1952 : The population is of 2 ' 372 inhabitant.
  • 1954 : A swing bridge is built between Port Isabel and the south of Padre Island.

The GULF Intracoastal Waterway , completed in the years 1950, increases the exchanges and the economic health of Isabel Port, but causes also problems. An open career during the construction of GWI pollutes the city. This last request assistance of the federal government to solve the problem of dust.

In the years 1960,65% of the production of shrimps of the state comes from the installations of Isabel Port.
