Isaac Jogues
Isaac Jogues , born the January 10th 1607, dead the October 18th 1646, was a missionary Jésuite who travelled and worked with the Amerindian of the North America. It gave to the Lac George its first European name, appealing the Lac of the the Blessed Sacrament . It belongs to the Canadian Martyrs, which are collectively celebrated the October 19th.
Born with Orleans, in France, Jogues the Society of Jesus in 1624 entered. In 1636, after having been ordered priest, it was sent in News-France for évangéliser the First nations. It arrived with the Montmagny governor. With the Father Brébeuf, it went to the big lakes, where it lived constantly in danger during six years. With Garnier, Petuns and Raymbault, it as explored far as with the Sault Sainte-Marie.
It was captured by the Iroquois in 1642, which were then in war with France. After torturebeing tortured and reducebeing reduced to slavery, it was brought to a village close to Albany. Merchants Dutch calvinists allowed him to escape. After his return in his native land, where it was accommodated by the mother of Louis XIV, the pope Urbain VIII exceptionally authorized it to say the mass, in spite of the fact that its hands were mutilated. He asked to obtain another mission towards Canada, and he could take again the boat in spring of 1644.
In 1646, while living among Iroquois with Ossernenon in the State of New York, where it was to negotiate peace, it was blame with its fellow-members for a harvest failure. For that, it was killed, Iroquois having always regarded it as a wizard. While entering a cabin, it was struck of a decapitated tomahawk then: its head Scalp ée was put on a Palissade and its body was thrown in the Rivière Mohawk.
It was canonized the June 29th 1930 by the pope Pie XI at the sides of the seven other Canadian martyrs. Many parishes with the the United States and the Canada are named in its honor, of which parishes of the towns of Asbestos and Saint-Hubert in Quebec.
