The is is a cardinal Point, opposed to the Western. It corresponds to the point of the horizon where the Sun rises, raising it.

In France, the word " Est" is often used to indicate the areas of the North-East of the country (Alsace, Lorraine, Franche-Comté in particular).

The expression " Eastern European country " indicated, time of the Cold war, all the countries of the Europe central and Eastern under Soviet influence (Warsaw Pact) or to socialist economy. The term is sometimes still employed currently (many people do not employ any more this term because of its connotation, and the economic and political evolutions recent, preferring terms like Central Europe, Balkans, etc…); when this expression is still used, it is in a direction more cultural than political, for example " musics of the East " indicate the musics of the Central and Eastern Europe, culture Slavic, Magyar, etc…
