Irun
Irun is a provincial town of Guipúzcoa in Euskadi, located at the north of the Spain. It is a frontier town between the France and the Spain delimited by the Bidassoa. This city-border orders the principal passage of the the Western Pyrenees.
History
The commercial and industrial character of Irún sets up this city in major urban core of the zone of the river Bidassoa. Irún is separated from Hondarribia by hardly three kilometers. These two cities are located opposite the French city of Hendaye, on the other side of the Bidassoa river. Irún seems a town of recent date, but, in fact, one finds there important vestiges of his past, like the church of Santa María del Juncal, of the 16th century, which has a frontage baroque and a Romance image of holy in question. The town hall baroque also appears among its monumental buildings. As well as the column of San Juan Harri which commemorates the independence of the city. Close to the place of Urdanibia is located the hermitage of Santa Elena, set up on a necropolis and a Roman temple. We will be able to also visit the Museum of the hermitage of Ama Xantalen.
Intercommunality
Today Irun, Hondarribia and Hendaye form a transborder urban community: the Consorcio Bidasoa-Txingudi.The common one belongs to the Basque Eurocité Bayonne - San Sebastian.
Leisures
Among the cultural and sporting leisures, one can name the Golf, the horsemanship, the delta wing or the circuits in Kayak, but also the national meetings and international of theater, cinema for devoted authors or new talents, inter alia. Just as in Hondarribia, Irún, there exists a “Alarde de Armas” (kind of military procession) in remembering the militia the old locality “fuerista” (locality with privileges) which maintained each village.From the border posts neighbors, it is possible to carry out excursions to discover the close Basque Côte and French localities.
