Irtych

The Irtych is a river of Siberia, affluent (left bank) of the Ob. Part of its course passes by China where it is named Ertix and by Kazakhstan where it is named Ertis .

Geography

Irtych (in Russian Иртыш; in Kazakh Ertis /Эртiс; in Tatar: İrteş /Иртеш ; in Mandarin: Erqisi /额尔齐斯河) takes its source in the Altaï mounts of Mongolia, runs out in Djoungarie (Western China) before crossing the Kazakhstan and the Siberia in the major part of its course. It is thrown in the Ob close to the town of Khanty-Mansiysk. Its name means “white river”. Irtych (: 4248  km) form with the lower course of Ob (: 1162  km) one of the longest rivers of the planète : the Irtych-Ob unit makes in all: 5410  km length. The basin of Irtych, a surface of: 1673470  km ², covers most of the Western Siberia.

The river is navigable on most of its length between April and October when it is not gelée : she is then traversed by boats of goods transport and passengers like by Tanker S. Omsk, seat of the Compagnie of Navigation of the River Irtych, is the largest river port of Western Siberia. Hydro-electric works were built on the course of the river not far from the border chinoise : stoppings of Oust-Kamenogorsk and Bakhtarminsk (1959). Canal Irtych-Karaganda the irrigation brings water to the desiccated grounds of the steppes of Kazakhstan.

The banks of the river were occupied by the Chinese, the Kalmouks and the Mongols before the arrival of the Russians at the 16th century. The conquest of the basin of Irtych by the Russian empire was completed at the beginning of the 19th century.
