Ironwood of Besancon

Holy Ironwood (of the Latin ferreolus man of iron ) (death the June 10th 212) (patron saint of Besancon) is a Diacre evangelist Christian Martyr of the 3rd century. He is the founder of the church of Besancon and the first evangelist of the area of Franche-Comté with his brother the priest Saint Ferjeux

Biography

Towards the end of the IIe century, the bishop Holy Irenee of Lyon, disciple of Holy Polycarpe of Smyrna, him even disciple of the apostle Jean sends two priests evangelists, Saint Ferjeux and his brother Saint Ironwood (originating in Athens in Greece) to found the Roman Catholic church of Vesontio (Latin Besancon in ) and évangéliser the Séquanie Gallo Romain E (current Franche-Comté)

They settle in a cave of the common of Saint-Ferjeux become today a district of Besancon, of or they take their action. The church of Saint-Ferjeux was built between 1890 and 1900 on the cave which still exists in the Crypte of the basilica

They are both martyrized the June 10th 212 and decapitated on order of the Gouverneur Romain Claude which sees in their Christian action a source of public disorder.

Saint Ferjeux and Saint Ironwood become the patron saint of Besancon. They are celebrated the June 16th.
