The Ironman Triathlon is an annual event which takes place with the the United States in the state of Hawaii including/understanding three stages of endurance: Swimming, Cycling, and Race on foot. This competition is at Kailua-Kona (Hawaii) and implies 3,86 kilometers of stroke (crossed bay of Kailua-Kona), followed by 180,2 kilometers of cycle race (return ticket of Keauhou with Hawi), and a marathon (that is to say 42,2 kilometers of race on foot) along the coast of Big Island (of Keauhou towards Keahole Point towards Kailua-Kona).

" Ironman Triathlon" is a Registered trademark of the World Triathlon Corporation. Because of the popularity of Ironman Triathlon, several other events were established in the world to be used like qualifications with the championship of the world for Hawaii. Competitions having the same generic name " Iron Outdistances Triathlon " the same distances and format have that Ironman; there exist also different Triathlon S with a similar format but at shorter distances.

History

Ironman Triathlon was the first major competition of the kind. First Ironman Triathlons were held with Honolulu February 1978 with 1980. In 1981, the competition moved towards the least urbanized Big Island by Valerie Silk. In 1982, Silk moved the date of the race from February to October. So this same year it there thus have two competitions of organized.

The original idea of Ironman Triathlon came during the ceremony from the awards from Perimeter Relay (a basic race by teams of 5 people) from 1977 to Oahu. Among the participants, there were many representatives of Mid-Pacific Road Runners and Waikiki Swim Club, whose members discussed for a long time which were the largest athletes, runners or swimmers. To this occasion, the commander of U.S. Navy John Collins indicated that a recent article in the magazine Sports Illustrated declared that Eddy Merckx, the large Belgian cyclist, held the record d'" oxygen uptake " and that no athlete had been able to equalize it, therefore perhaps the cyclists were more athletic than the other sportsmen. The commander Collins and his wife, Judy, had taken part in the triathlons organized in 1974 and 1975 by San Diego Track Club in and around Mission Bay, California, like in Optimist Sports Fiesta Triathlon with Coronado, California, in 1975. Several other soldiers in the public were also accustomed races of San Diego, and they included/understood the concept quickly when the commander Collins suggested that the debate is sliced by a race combining the three competitions of long distance existing on the island; the Waikiki Roughwater Swim (3,85 km), the cycle race Around-Oahu (115 miles; originally a competition over 2 days) and the marathon of Honolulu (42,195 km). It is good to note that nobody present at this time there had never carried out a cycle race; Cdt. Hakes calculated that by shortening the race of 3 miles and while rolling clockwise around the island, the cyclist part could start on arrival of Waikiki Rough Water and finish in Aloha Tower, the traditional departure of the marathon of Honolulu. In order to contribute, each athlete accepted a paper of three pages listing some rules and a description of the race. Writing with the hand on the last page, one could read this exhortation: “Swim 2.4 miles! Bike 112 miles! Run 26.2 miles! Brag for the rest off your life!” (“Swim 2,4 Miles! Roll 112 miles! Will run 26,2 miles! You for the remainder of your life praise! ”). With a sign of approval to a local runner which was manifestly known for its demanding training sessions, Collins known as: " Whoever finishes first, we' L cal him the Iron Man." (“That which finishes first, we will call it him the iron man. ”). Of the fifteen men having started the test early the morning of February 18th, 1978, twelve completed the race and first Ironman of the world, Gordon Haller, achieves it in 11 hours, 46 minutes, and 58 seconds.

Without any effort of communication, the race gathered 50 athletes the following year. The race, however, was delayed one day because of bad weather conditions; fifteen candidates only took the departure of the race Sunday morning. Tom Warren, 35 years, gained in 11 hours, 15 minutes, and 56 seconds. Lyn Lemaire, a champion cyclist of Boston, finished sixth and became the first “Ironwoman”.

Hakes projected to replace the race by a relay to attract more participants, but the journalist Barry McDermott of “Sports Illustrated' S journalist”, who was in the sector to cover a tournament of Golf, discovered the race and wrote ten pages on the subject. During the year which followed, of the hundreds of curious participants contacted Collins.

Ironman triathlon inspired the addition of the Triathlon (in spite of shorter distances) to the Olympic Games of summer of 2000 with Sydney.

Ironman Triathlon is an event which pushes the participants in the limits of the endurance. Some, however, find the distances a little short compared to their limits.
