Iron doors (the Danube)

One speaks about the Iron Doors to indicate a throat of the the Danube. It constitutes part of the border between the Serbia and the south-west of the Romania.

At this place, the Fleuve separates the south from the Carpates of the north of the mountains of the Balkans.

The procession has a 135 km length; it begins with Baziaş and is completed in Turnu-Severin. The width of the river varies there from 2 km to less than 150 m by places.

It is necessary to distinguish three parts in this unit:

  • the higher doors (Gornja Klissura),
  • the lower doors (Doljna Klissura) or ravelled of Kazan,
  • Between the two the river widens in an important way.
