Irish Citizen Army

The Irish Citizen Army ( ICA - in Gaelic Am Na SaorĂ nach ) is a militia of working self-defense, creates the November 23rd 1913, by James Connolly and James Larkin; it has its seat in Liberty Hall of Dublin.

The August 26th 1913 bursts a general strike with Dublin, which finds its origin in a conflict with the company of the trams. The hardness of the confrontation which will last until February 1914, encourages the trade union leaders (in particular those of the ITGWU, Irish Transport and General Workers' Union ) to take measures, for the protection of the strikers.

At the time of the Insurrection of Easter 1916, its members take part in the engagements against the British army, Constance Markievicz (the red Countess) directs the female section from there.
