Ipswich (Australia)

Ipswich (: 145000 inhabitants is a city (" city") Queensland in Australia. It is on the Bremer River - what was worth dramatic floods to him in particular in 1893 and 1974 - with approximately 30 kilometers in the west of Brisbane.

The area was explored for the first time by the européensen 1826 when the captain Patrick Logan, ordering penal settlement of Moreton Bay went up the river and discovered important limestone reserves and other minerals. In 1827, the first convicts and supervisors were able to exploit limestone and the city which was built there was called " Limestone" (" calcaire" in English) name which one finds today in " Limestone Street" a street of Ipswich. In 1843, the city changed name and took avrec the agreement of the governor Sir George Gipps the name of Ipswichcomme the English city.

The ore and coal mining other also continued at the XXe century so that the image of the city suffered and still suffers from this image of mining city.

At present the city benefits from the proximity of the town of Brisbane where many inhabitants prefer to leave the capital because of the price of the residences. It also profits from the greatest Australian air base (Amberley Base) which shelters two squadrons (n° 1 and 6) of F111 and the squadron n° 34 which exploits DHC Caribou S.
