Ioujny island

The island Ioujny (in Russian: Южныйостров) is the island of the south of the archipelago of Nova Zembla, in the north of the Russia. Its surface is of: 33275 km ²; it is thus the third larger island of Russia, the others being Sakhaline and the island Severny, of which it is separated by the Détroit from Matotchkine.

Originally ground of the Nénètses, the island was evacuated in the years 1950 to make nuclear tests there.

It is known for its large colonies of birds of sea. Its landscapes are especially of type Toundra.

It forms politically part of the Oblast d' Arkhangelsk, as the remainder of the archipelago.
