Little information is available concerning the history of the island.

Tombs found in the area of Manganari in the south of the island show that Ios was occupied as of thousand-year-old IIIe before our era.

It is known that Ios belonged to the Ligue of Délos to the IV, then that it belonged to the League of Nésiotes centered with Tinos at the time hellenistic.

Ios belonged to the islands of the Duché of Naxos starting from 1205. In 1300, it had been reconquered by the Byzantine Empire when Schiavi, Venetian seized the island and made homage to the Duke of Naxos of it. In 1397, Ios was the possession direct of the Duke Francesco I Crispo who gave it in heritage to his fifth wire, Marco. The agreement of 1419 between the Ottoman Empire and Venice confirms that the island belonged to Sérénissime. It would seem that its population declined so much so that its lord had to repopulate it, partly with orthodoxe Albanians. At the beginning of the 16th century, the island passed in dowry in the Venetian family of Pisani.

She was conquered by Barberousse for the Ottoman Empire in 1537.
