Iona is small a island the North-West of the Scotland, in the interior Hébrides, separated from the island of Mull by the strait of Iona. Iona with 4,8 km of north in the south and 2,4 km of is in west, extends on 800 hectares. The point more raised, Dun I, culminate to 101 Mr. the island is connected to its Mull neighbor via a ferry of Fionnphort to the small aglomretation of Baille Mor.

History

In 563, holy Colomba d' Iona or Columcille , exiled Ireland, based a Monastère on the island under the double patronage of Conall mac Comgaill king of Dal Riada and Brude mac Maelchon king of the Pictes.

From there, the christianization left Écosse.La community was directed during a hundred year by princes abbots resulting like the founder from the Irish dynasty of the Cenél Conaill

It is also believed that the Livre of Kells was written on the island at that time. The monastery is burned by the Vikings in 802 and 806 when 68 members of the community are massacred. A new monastery sheltered better of predatory will be built with Kells in 807. In 830 the Diarmait abbot will transport the relics of Colomba Saint to Ireland to protect them from the Vikings. The dignity of abbot will be then reserved for Irish abbots often not residents until Gillechrist O' Maddor died in 1062.

The monastery will be rebuilt in 1203 for the Bénédictins by Reginald Mac Donald Maître of Mull and Seigneur of the Islands and will survive until the Réforme and the destruction of the buildings in 1561 on order of the Parliament of Scotland.

Iona had also become the Nécropole of the kings of Dalriada and their successors, the first kings d' Écosse which were buried there until Donald Ban at the end of XIe century.

In 1938, George MacLeod founded a Christian ecumenical community there.
