biography
It is a Médecin, trained with Salerno, which lived at the 12th century. Indeed, of two of its texts (three if one takes account of the Quae medicinae ) were transcribed in the Codex salernitanus of Breslau (Wroclaw (Breslau), Stadtbibl. 1303 OLIM) now disappeared. However this exceptional Codex from the point of view of the history of medicine salernitaine was dated from the years 1160-1170. Jean from Saint Paul must thus have lived in XIIe century, perhaps until the beginning of XIIIeIn spite of the many attempts at identification carried out since XVIe century, Jean from Saint Paul remains an enigmatic character. Perhaps French, it was often confused with Platearius, and was also identified under the name of Iohannes Castalius. The time to which he lived and its geographic origins did not cease fluctuating with the liking of the biographical notes fixed by the old dictionaries.
He is probably the author of the Liber virtutum (also titrated Liber of simplicium medicinarum virtutibus. Incipit: Cogitanti mihi of simplicium medicinarum virtutibus) and the Breviarium (Incipit: Assiduis petitionibus me karissimi compendiose). One allots also the to him Flores dietarum (incipit: Corpus hominis ex quartet humoribus report), as well as a treated court entitled Quae medicinae pro quibus morbis donandae sunt (incipit Pro dolore capitis ex flegmate vel melancholia datur).
