Pierre Riel, marquis de Beurnonville is a Marshal of France born the May 10th 1752 with Champignol-lez-Mondeville close to Bar-sur-Aube and dead April 23rd 1821 with Paris, par, Marshal of France, etc
Biography
He is the son of a Charron and small farmer of the Aube, Pierre Riel. The name of Beurnonville appears only later, in 1789, when the commune of Champignol, proud of the reputation acquired by one of his/her children, makes him gift of the Pâtis of Beurnonville.
Military career
It was intended by his parents at the ecclesiastical state, it comes very young person to follow courses to Paris; but, pulled by its taste for the military state, it was allowed at 14 years, the March 11th 1766 in the gendarmerie of Lunéville, it is registered like supernumerary with row of Sous-lieutenant, in the company of the gendarmes of the queen.The January 10th 1774, it engages like volunteer with the Régiment of Ile-de-France, embarks in the squadron of the baillif de Suffren, is wounded twice in engagements on sea. The August 10th 1775, it becomes Carry-flag.
Second lieutenant in 1777 in the colonial Regiment of the Ile-de-France, it announced himself in the three campaigns of the India, under the orders of Suffren. While it is with Saint-Denis of the island Bourbon, the October 27th 1778, it married a widowed rich person creole, Genevieve Gillot the Pond.
The August 13rd 1780, he is lieutenant under major assistance of the militia of the island Bourbon, he fulfills the functions of major of place to Saint-Denis, but following contentions with the governor who relieves it, he must return in France. His wife refuses to follow it, they divorce a little later.
The November 22nd 1788, it buys the load of colonel lieutenant of the company of the Suisse S of the count d' Artois. The December 10th 1789, it is patented colonel of infantry.
The August 8th 1790, it is ordering National guard of its canton of Longchamp.
The Revolution
Assistance-of-camp of the marshal Luckner with the Armed with the Rhine the March 6th 1792, it passed Brigadier in the same year the May 13rd 1792. It makes countryside with the Armée with North. It takes part in the catch of Menin and Courtrai, order the Camp of Mauldre under Dumouriez. Responsible for the defense of the camp of Maulde, it resisted during several months higher forces and made, on this occasion, that Dumouriez called it, because of its high stature and its impetuous courage, French Ajax .The August 22nd 1792, it becomes general Lieutenant. Ordering avant-garde of Dumouriez, it fights with Valmy, and Jemmapes (November 6th).
Named then, under Custine, commander-in-chief of the armed with fine Luxembourg and the Moselle 1792, it seizes Arlon, but fails against Trier and is put on leave by the provisional Council (January 18th 1793). Charged with conquering the Luxembourg, it did not operate this conquest without making some losses which it dissimulated in its reports/ratios. It did not fear to say in one of them that the enemy had lost many people, but that the French had been free for the little finger of a hunter.
The February 4th 1793, Beurnonville was named by the Convention Ministre for the war, to replace Jean-Nicolas Pache. Dumouriez writes to him, thinking that it can support its projects. But Beurnonville gives the general letter to the Defense committee which decides the arrest of Dumouriez.
April 1st 1793, Beurnonville is sent, with four other police chiefs of the Convention, near the Armée with North to carry out the arrest. Assistant of the police chiefs charged to go to stop Dumouriez in his camp, Dumouriez gave order to stop these police chiefs themselves and wanted to exclude of it Beurnonville which says to him low: You lose me! Dumouriez included/understood it and made it stop like the others two days later. It delivered them to the Austrians who threw them in the prisons of Olmütz, where they remain thirty months.
The November 3rd 1795, they are exchanged against the girl of Louis XVI, Marie-Therese de France. To its return, it is attached to the army of the Interior, then assistant with the Minister for the War, Aubert-Dubayet.
End of the Revolution
It passes to the command as a chief of the army of North and Batavie in the current of the year 1796, then, the September 9th, with the Armée with Sambre-and-Meuse which it preserved only a few months. In 1797, it was on the point, supported by count de Vaublanc to be named member of the Directoire instead of François de Barthélemy. According to the analysis of the Count de Vaublanc ( memory of the Count de Vaublanc , volume 2, page 387), “It had large ascending on Barras, which would have involved Carnot towards Barras and Beurnonville, all by intimidating the two others”, and thus consequently would have served the royalist cause better.Returning then to the Armed with North then, this one having been removed, with the Armed with Batavie (October 1797), become a simple army of observation, it is favorable to the coup d'etat of the 18 fructidor. It accepted the command of the Armée with Holland, was soon replaced by Joubert and returned to Paris with the title of general inspector.
It is shown also favorable to the Coup d'etat of the 18 brumaire. Bonaparte names later it a few days ambassador plenipotentiary with Berlin.
To its return, it brought back a correspondence who revealed the intrigues of the party Royaliste, and who was printed under the title of: Papers seized with Bareuth and Mende, department of Lozere .
It was then sent the September 16th 1802 as ambassador to Madrid, and its return, was appointed large officer of the Légion of honor (June 15th 1804), senator (June 2nd 1805), count of the Empire (May 28th 1808); but from all the generals of the French revolution, it was only excluded from the title of marshal, Napoleon, says one, granting any military capacity to him.
The August 21st 1806, it is Admis with the retirement, it is provided with the senatorery of Limoges. The December 9th 1809, it is provided with the senatorery of Florence. The March 20th 1812, it is charged to organize the troops of the 1st round of applause of the national guard in the 21e military division.
Restoration
Member of the provisional government the April 3rd 1814, the April 26th 1814, it is to advise of State of Louis XVIII. The May 13rd 1814, it is Minister of state, then the June 4th 1814, Pair of France and finally the July 22nd 1814, Grand-croix of the Légion of honorProscribed by a decree during the Hundred Days, it followed the king Louis XVIII to Ghent and remained to him always devoted. The September 19th 1815, after having found all its old dignities, it is named with the private Council.
The October 23rd 1815, he is President of the charged commission of the examination of the titles of the former officers and the royal armies of the interior, then the December 25th 1815, president of the charged commission to draw up the reports/ratios of service of the royal guard and the military household of the king.
The July 3rd 1816, it becomes Marshal of France, then the July 31st 1817, Marquis and the September 30th 1820, Commandeur of the Holy Spirit.
The April 23rd 1821, it dies in Paris, of an attack of drop, it was high-ranking dignitary about the Franc-Maçonnerie.
Its name is reproduced on the northern face of the Triumphal arch of the Star of Paris.
