the Guard is a common French, located in the department of the Var and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure.

Its inhabitants is called the Gardéens .

Geography

Located in the VAr at the east of Toulon, between Marseilles and Nice. Its territory extends on 1.554 hectares distributed as follows:
  • 3 kilometers of littoral
  • 75 kilometers of roadway system
  • 642,5 hectares of urbanization
  • 21,4 hectares of forest
  • 400 hectares of urban green areas

History

The commune of the Guard holds its name of its rock which, as of the Antiquité, was used as station of guet.

the Guard has vestiges of the Antiquité and Roman period

Cité in 1056 under the name of Guarda , the Château was stronghold of the bishops of Toulon at the 13th century, of Castellanes with 15th, then seigniory of Glandevès then of the Thomas. Today there remains about it only the vault and a tower of angle.

Watchtower of Toulon to the the Middle Ages. the Guard underwent many invasions but also the wars of religion. It was ransacked in 1707 by the troops of Savoy whereas it was known under the name of the Guard Toulon .

Holy Maur , owner of the commune, is in fact called a Maur which passed by there in 542. Famished when it entered the village, an old woman gave him for bread and onions. Maur blesses them and decided that as from this day, the onions of the Guard would have the softness of apple.

Old prosperous agricultural center, the Guard became urban suburbs of Toulon. Rock of andesite one extracted the paving stones from Toulon.

More recently, for " punir" the town of Toulon to be itself delivered to English, Napoleon Bonaparte will transferra the district of co. Marguerite at the village of the Guard. This is why, there is a city hall annex in this district, a little far away from the administrative center town of the commune.

Jean-Louis Masson was born with the Guard the 2/5/54. Colonel (er) of Gendarmerie, Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, knight of the National order of the Merit. Holder of one OF right (university of social sciences of Toulouse), memory entitled " the social dialog in the gendarmerie" .

Famous characters

  • Jean Aicard (Toulon 1848 - Paris 1921) Poet and dramatic author, member of the French Academy resided in the commune at the villa " The Bay-trees roses" starting from 1864. The house became the appointment of the celebrities of the time: Michelet, Emile Olivier, Frederic Mistral, Edouard Schuré, Ernest Reyer, Gaston Bonnier, Pierre Parcelled out, Mrs. Juliette Adam, Charles Richet, Antoine Alballat, Monseigneur Jean Calvet, Paul Gaultier and Edme Tassy.

Places and monuments

With the the Middle Ages, the rock of the village was used as headland with the castle of the époque.
Alas, the revolution passed by there, the castle was destroyed and the rock was used as career.

Today, it subsite of the castle only the Romance church and a tower.
