Intrinsics

Intrinsics (also indicated by the Acronym Xt , for X toolkit , “toolbox X” ) is a software Bibliothèque for the protocol X Window System. More precisely, it is about a library using the library of very low level Xlib and which provides a API more convivial (directed object) to develop programs X11 containing Widget S graphs. It is usable with the computer programming languages C and C++.

The library of Xlib low-level provides functions making it possible to interact with a waiter X11, but it does not offer any function for the implementation of the graphic elements which one usually finds in a graphic Environnement, such as the buttons, the menus, etc Of such elements are called Widget S. the Xt library proposes functionalities to create then to manage various types of widgets, without however providing specific widgets. The specific widgets are implemented by other libraries which use Xt, such as Xaw and Motif.

A programmer can for example make use of the Xt library to create and use a new type of widget, such as a button in three states. As the applications require generally only one standard play of widgets, they often rest on libraries such as Xaw or Motif providing these widgets, rather than to implement them directly with Xt.
