The intrigue , of the Latin , intricare , means “complication, embrouillement, imbroglio”. The intrigue of a Récit is the detail of its Péripétie S. In a part of Théâtre, the intrigue is the stating of the history which will proceed. It is combination of circumstances and of incidents which forms the node even action, which suspends it and threatens to stop it or from there divert marked goal, until the outcome brings back there in an unexpected way and precipitates it.

The word was marked a long time intricate . With, Crow written:

But finally these practices

can engage You in annoying intricate,

in the Liar (I, VI ).

The primitive form of the word “intrigues” and its etymology explain its direction in literature: the intrigue, of which the role is to wake up the curiosity of the reader or the spectator and to hold it in breath, horn this curiosity, excites it for best satisfying while opposing and by putting in fight the events, the interests, the situations, and by wrapping their fray of an erudite darkness from where the light will emerge later.

There are two kinds of intrigues: one, very surface, makes come the difficulties which block the action, from accumulated unforeseeable occurrences to pleasure by the imagination of the author; the other, more erudite, gives birth to the obstacles from concerned passions, the natural development or contrasts of the characters.

The intrigue is one of the essential parts of any literary composition having for object the account or the setting in scene of an action, i.e. narrative poem and Romance , as well as of the dramatic works. It is in the latter however that it readily is considered. The intrigue is so well in its place in the Comédie which it is enough to form one of its kinds, the comedy of intrigue. If it does not have the same importance in the comedies of manners and character, it is not to them less, with a certain degree, essential. Without it, the Tragédie would be reduced to the painting of a situation, and the drama would be only one continuation of tables and Scène S without dramatic interest, just as, without it, a narrative poem would be only one continuation décousue of episode S. By tying all the parts of a work, the intrigue gives him the unit and the life, and contributes perhaps than the perfection of the execution and the style to captivate the spectator or the reader.

Art to prepare, tie and untie the intrigue, to interfere and disentangle all wire is an important component of the dramatic art which bursts in the exposure, the continuation of the Péripétie S and the Dénouement. The intrigue makes play artificial springs are used to prepare the reversals of the action; and explain them when they occur, more or less unexpected: one should not let them too much see. A written letter and which is mistaken in address, a pledge of remembering, a trace of passage, a detail of a meeting, any material object being used with a recognition or a confusion of anybody, are banals means of intrigue of which it is necessary to be useful with discretion. They are called, in slang of theater, of the “strings”, by allusion to the too visible wire which make drive the Marionnette S.

In general, the skill to lead the intrigue is not because direct of art digging the situations and developing the characters. One aims to the recreation, the other tends to the durable and major impressions. In the Greek spectacles, the intrigue of the tragedy and comedy were also simple, and the traditional times followed the same traditions. The sobriety of the action, the effects and the means is everywhere the law of the first maturity of Article. Some authors used much of the artifices of the intrigue, by drowning them in complications suitable to put at fault the perspicacity of the spectator. Their work is a whole enigma. The first manner of Corneille provides examples of these parts muddled which refuse with the analysis, under the feather even of their author. Beaumarchais was rained in these learnedly prepared incidents which put the characters in the embarrassment or make some leave. The light comedy and the comedy carried at the last point, with Scribe and Sardou, the practice of the operations and artifices dramatic.
