Interval

the Interval is a common French, located in the department and the area of the Meeting. Its inhabitants is called Between-Deusiens.

Geography

The common car its name owing to the fact that it is located between the two principal Affluent S of the Rivière Saint-Etienne: the Arm of Cilaos in the west and the Arm of the Plain in the east. This geographical location explains also its currency: “ Two arms, a heart ”.

The communes bordering are Cilaos, Saint-Benoît, Saint-Louis, Saint-Pierre and the Plug.

History

The Interval became the first June 1839 the 5th section of the commune of Saint-Pierre; previously, it depended civilly and economically on Saint-Pierre where one recorded baptisms, marriages and death.

The Interval accepted a Special Assistant in 1840. It was then Vital HOARAU which, the first, took the administrative office of the village.

Until 1845 the inhabitants of the Interval did not have a church yet. To fill their religious duty they were to make a length and painful voyage to St-Louis or St-Pierre.

The commune is created in 1882.

Infrastructures

One finds on the communal territory several nursery schools and primary, a public college, the college Dimitile, which counted 412 pupils with the re-entry 2005. There is no college.

The commune is equipped with many public equipment of which: a library, a gymnasium, a dojo, a swimming pool, a municipal stage, a synthetic stage, a local cinema, a room of animation and leisures, a parental crib, a multi-media public space, a surccursale Childhood Family-Action of Health-SME.

Economy

The village of the Interval develops thanks to the culture of the coffee introduces into the island in 1715, culture which will mark the rise of the colony during all the XVIIIe century. During the XIXe century the coffee remains one of the field crops of the Interval, the cane also meets a certain success there.

From the years 1950, the Interval knows a series of major changes which leave the Commune of its torpor. Roads, buildings, cisterns of water and electrical communications during the years 1960-1970, like many other communes Tops of the island, the Interval profits from the public basket of the State and the local government agencies.

But this effort is accentuated with the years 1980-1990. If agriculture remains the main activity of the commune, certain cultures were given up, like the tobacco and géranium.

Other activities were born like the poultry farming, the Interval being with Salazie one of the principal avicolous areas of the island. The dynamism of the commune as from years 1980 results in the increase in its population. : From 3624 inhabitants in 1961, this figure passes to 4259 inhabitants in 1990 and 5585 in 2004.

Nowadays, the active population of the Interval is of 60% and unemployment thus represents nearly 40%. The economic fabric is characterized in the following way: Companies of reduced size: a majority of them do not have an employee. The individual businesses are in addition in strong increase.

In addition, one notes the presence of a commercial economic fabric reduced with a mini-market, some shops and early product.

One finds a hairdresser, three restaurants, tables of Hosts and lodgings.

Agriculture is well represented on the village. An importance of the market gardenings is noted and frutuières signs of a development of diversification.

On the other hand the number of owners is in reduction since the year 1989. The breeding out-ground develops with the workshop poultry “brooded of gold” located at Arm-Length. On the Interval, the tourist activity develops since a score of year at the opening hour of the first lodgings today, it exists a score of structures of lodgings.

The current will is to accompany the tourist development so that in the long term this sector is carrying employment and positive repercussions for the village.

The commune organizes each year in May a Fête around the Choca.
