Plougonvelin ( Breton Plougonvelen in ) is a common department of the Finistere, in the area Brittany, in France. It belongs to the Communauté of communes of the Country of Iroise.
Geography
Located at 20 kilometers in the west of Brest, Plougonvelin is a coastal commune, which has as neighbors Conquet and Locmaria-Plouzané.The coast is characterized in the west by its cliffs average height, which comprise some strikes, and in the North-East of the Fort of Bertheaume, one counts four beaches, in the handle of Bertheaume:

The habitat concentrates on the zones of Trez-Hir and the “borough”, the hamlet of Saint-Mathieu cash few dwellings.
History
- At the 16th century, Plougonvelin belonged to the seneschalsy of Brest and Saint-Renan.
Demography
The population reaches 3.525 inhabitants in 2006, according to the provisional census. The population increases by 3% per annum since 1999.

Point of Saint-Mathieu

The site of the Point of Saint-Mathieu, in the extreme West of Plougonvelin, comprises the ruins of the Abbaye of Saint-Mathieu of the 12th century, a vault built at the 19th century on the site of the Notre-Dame church of the Grace (set up at the 7th century), the Phare of Saint-Mathieu, built in 1835, a semaphore, built in 1906, as well as a Cénotaphe (monument and crypts with the memory of the missings at sea of the three navy).
Extremely of Bertheaume

Located at the South-east of Plougonvelin, the small island strengthened that one calls today the Fort of Bertheaume present of the traces of very old use (as of the Stone Age), before becoming the Castle of Perzel for the Ducs of Brittany at the 5th century, then to be strengthened by Vauban at the 17th century.
Strategic place for the defense and the monitoring of the Narrow part of Brest, it also comprises constructions dating from the Second world war.
Since 1992, after one long period of abandonment, it is again accessible to the public.
