The International union of Biathlon (shortened IBU: International Biathlon Union ) is an association of national federations having for goal to develop biathlon on a worldwide scale and to organize international competitions there. It is the directing body of the Biathlon.
It was founded in July 1993 after being attached to the Modern Union of Pentathlon and Biathlon since 1953. Thus the 57 members who depended on the preceding federation were transferred directly in the new federation.
It is only in 1998 that CIO recognizes this federation.
Its seat was installed with Salzburg in 1999.
