International trade-union confederation

The international Trade-union confederation (CSI, International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Internationaler Gewerkschaftsbund (IGB)) is the first trade-union international organization. She was founded in 2006.

History

The CSI is resulting from the bringing together carried out since the years 2000 between the international Confédération of the free trade unions and the world Confédération of work and a " group contact" nonaffiliated organizations gathering inter alia CGT French, Argentinian CTA and Polish OPZZ. The third international trade-union confederation, the world Trade union federation, in lose speed since the fall of the Soviet Union remains well off this bringing together.

In January 2005, the general secretaries of the CISL and the CMT launch to Porto Alegre the effective process of creation of the CSI whose congress founder took place of 1st at November 3rd 2006 with Vienna. October 31st, 2006, the international Confederation of the free trade unions which counted 241 organizations affiliated in 156 countries representing approximately 155 million members and the world Confédération of the work (CMT) which counted 144 organizations affiliated in 116 countries representing approximately 26 million members are autodissolvent.

The confederation whose seat is installed with Brussels has as a general secretary the English Guy Ryder, hitherto general secretary of CISL.

The CSI , which wants to be unit and pluralist declares itself: opened with the democratic, independent and representative central trade-unions, in the respect of their autonomy and of the diversity of their sources of inspiration and their forms of organization .

Objectives

The constitution of a more powerful confederation is according to its craftsmen the trade-union answer to the universalization of the economy and the capital.

The new organization will have a more important weight for the continuation of the actions of lobbying near the multilateral institutions such as the the World Bank, the Fonds international currency (the IMF) or the World Trade organization (OMC), which up to now did not take into account the claims of “social clause” ranges by the trade unions.

The CSI aims also to be confronted with the multinational corporations and to give its support everywhere where the independent trade unionism weak and is repressed. It plans to accentuate the bringing together with the other organizations of the civil society, of which the ONG and to take part in the worldwide social forums.

Composition

Regional structures

With her creation, the international Trade-union confederation gathers 306 active trade-union organizations in 154 countries and representing more than 168 million workers. She maintains close links with the European Confédération of the trade unions, and the regional organizations of old the CISL and CMT must amalgamate for the end of the year 2007. These organizations were:

Africa: ICFTU Regional African Organization (ICFTU-AFRO) and trade-union democratic Organization of the African workers (ODSTA-CMT)
America: Regional Organización Interamericana de Trabajadores (ORIT-CISL) and Central Latinoamericana de Trabajadores (CLAT-CMT) for the Latin America and National Alliance off Postal and Federal Employees for the North America.
Peaceful Asia and : ICFTU-Asian and Regional Pacific Organization (IFCTU-APRO) and Brotherhood off Asian Trade Unionists (BATU-WCL)
