International film festival of women of Creteil

The International film festival of Women of Creteil , called AFIFF , is a cinematographic festival created in 1978 and dedicated to the films whose realization is entrusted to women. Projections take place in particular with the Maison of Arts and the Culture of Creteil.

Genesis of the Festival

  • a Little history: the International film festival of Women was born in 1979 in a very unfavourable economic situation with the first attempts from the directors. For 30 years, it has supported the women in their first films and to the exit into the room. The number of the directors who then accounted for 2% in the profession in Europe is estimated today at 12% in Europe (15 to 20% in France).

We thus had the intuition of this opening, at the same time historical, artistic and sociological, which done the one of the exits into the room today. We are proud (E) S to have accompanied this phenomenon as of its beginnings and happy (its) by the recognition which the directors enjoy today, mainly in Europe.

The cinema of the women had to be invented in margin, it occupies the screens today. At the dawn of the 30e Festival in 2008, which can we say of the history of this festival and films of women, in whom we were very influential, in order to effectively define our project for the future in a technological context in full change?

We had left in the identity euphoria to research a cinema women, we passed gradually by several phases to arrive at a space “films of women” who implies a multiplicity of the glances, varied artistic currents, multiple identity research. Without giving up underlining the elements of what upset the cinema thanks to the contribution of the women (time, the bond very strong deprived public space/, time slowed down… etc), the discovered option, exploration, census propelled us in all the countries of the world through all the times in order to stress the importance of the women in the profession: at the same time quantitative and qualitative with the increasing arrival of the young generations and the women directors of the countries underprivileged or emigrated in Europe.

the delay in the census will never be filled but we succeeded in returning the visibility of the directors of each continent at the same time in space and time.

  • founders: Jackie Buet & Elisabeth Tréhard

  • members of the Board of directors: Ghaïss Jasser (President), Martine Aumaître (secretary), Dominique Fargeot (treasurer), Francoise Uneven, Jeanine Chauvet

Course of the Festival

the Festival during 10 days proposes a whole of films but also of devices which makes it possible each one to make its route according to its tastes, its desires. The grid posts nearly 150 films to see, to discover. The meetings at the House of Arts start at midday and finish about midnight and half. Three rooms uninterrupted, of the places of debates, the meetings…

  • the competition: each year, fifty unseen films are presented. With 10 feature films of fiction, 10 documentary feature films, 30 court-measurings.

  • Section set of themes or geographical: for 30 years, the festival has set up sections to make visible the work of the women in the cinema world. Each year a lighting is made on an area of the world, a country or around a trade.

  • Homages or freehand: they are winks, suprises made with directors that we follow since their beginning. Already several directors came: Ruth Beckermann, Reflected Nair, Maria Klonaris & Katerinia Thomadaki,

  • Stories to see: this section created by Sonia Bressler, within the team of the Festival, four years ago, makes it possible to be questioned around broad topics. This programming gathers in majority of documentary which raises and proposes to decipher the topicality. Already the concepts Of asylum, from exile, Of difference (S), the Utopias, the desires passed under the microscope of this inventive section and rebel.

  • Vidéos Women of Creteil: installation by Martine Delpon within the framework of the actions of district carried out near the women resulting from immigration. Each year, a training course of realization proceeds before the festival. The objective is to make it possible each one to carry out a one minute old film on a topic (like the ages, the receipts of kitchen, " insoumises"). All the films are then shown at the time of the festival in a special meeting which gathers Vidéos one Minute of the whole world.

  • Seed of Cinéphage: for more than 20 years, we have offered the possibility to the high-school pupils and to the schoolboys to discover the back of the decoration of the cinema. We propose to them to take part in the festival during the 10 days and not-stop. Workshops to them are proposed the morning (with an initiation with the trades of journalism, or realization, or initiation to a trade of the cinema: its, decoration, costume, etc), at the conclusion they must produce a film, a report, a newspaper, etc During 10 days, they discover the festival. Since 2005, initiation with the trades of journalism their is proposed. the College Guillaume Budé de Limeil Brévannes, takes part, each year, with the creation of Festimages, the Télé newspaper of the Festival. The class framed by their teachers: Sylvie Planchard, Jean-Philippe Jacquemin, Guillaume Poitrat, must carry out reports (to turn, assemble, find subjects, etc) for a diffusion with 20:00 - in premium time. the College Leon Blum of Creteil takes part with a class in the realization of the written daily newspaper of the festival. The every day the pupils are with the Festival, they carry out interviews, the installation of the newspaper, its impression like its diffusion at the same time in room and on Internet.

During 10 days, we thus try to sensitize the public and the young people with a significant, new, different cinematography. We set up and show our workshops in order to make become aware that a festival they are not only ten days of festivities, it is also a year of work and reflection. It is as for this reason as we set up a Resource center IRIS, accessible to the year.
