International festival of the Sahara

The International festival of the Sahara is a annual Festival organized in the town of Douz (Tunisia). The event, which takes place during four days at the end of the month of December, attracts thousands of people of all Tunisia and other countries of the the Maghreb.

History

The first event of the kind, the Festival of the dromedary, makes its appearance in 1910 in the form of races of Dromadaire S and popular plays placed under the aegis of the resident general French.

In 1967 takes place the first session of the festival after independence according to the wills of the president Habib Bourguiba who wants to make the oldest festival of it and most known of the country. Me hammed El Marzougui, which dedicated its life to the transmission of the knowledge and the love of the Lifestyle and the wandering traditions , is the true founder of the festival in his new form. In 1981, the festival takes an international dimension with the participation of Arab Pays and African.

Unfolding

After the official ceremony of opening, the principal demonstrations proceed on the Hnaiech place surrounded by Tente S Bedouins: races and combat of dromedaries, fantasia, ceremonies of Bedouin traditional Marriage S or Hunting with the sloughi.

During the evening, groups come from other countries carry out Chant S and popular Danse S. However, the central event is the annual contest of Poésie, under the direction of the Poète Abdellatif Belgacem Marzoughi, organized in order to keep alive this cultural tradition of the companies of the desert.
