International federation of vexillologic associations

The International federation of vexillologic associations (FIAV) is an international federation of 51 associations and institutions regional, national and international which study the Vexillologie, that the FIAV defines in its consitution like “the creation and the development of a base of knowledge on the Drapeau X of all types, their forms and functions, and thus of the scientific theories and principles based on this knowledge”.

The official translations of French name FIAV are:

  • in English: International The Federation off German Vexillological Associations
  • in : International Föderation Vexillologischer Gesellschaften
  • in Spanish: Federación Internacional de Asociaciones Vexilológicas.

The FIAV was organized on September 3rd, 1967, with the second international congress of Vexillologie with Rüschlikon in Suisse. It was officially created on September 7th, 1969 with the third international congress of vexillology to Boston, Massachussets.

The FIAV is directed by a directory of three people: the president, the general secretary and the general secretary of the congresses. The directory deals with the various businesses of the FIAV and organizes the sessions of the General meeting, which are taken place during the international congresses of vexillology. The general meeting of the FIAV is made up of a delegate of each member of the FIAV. The general meeting elects the members of the directory and establishes the policy of the FIAV.

Flag of the FIAV

The flag of the FIAV was drawn by Klaes Sierksma and was slightly modified by the Steering Committee of the second international congress of vexillology. It was presented to the public on September 3rd, 1967 and described as follows:

“On a blue bottom, extending horizontally, two yellow cords form interlaced nodes”.

The blue color is defined as being the U239 color of the system Pantone, the color Jaune is U123 of the Pantone system.

The flags modified for the three officers of the FIAV were approved in 1999.
