History

University worldwide games (1923-1940)

It is French Jean Petitjean delegated to the sport of the National union of the students of France and the international Confédération of the students which organizes the first university worldwide games in May 1923 with Paris. Then, under the aegis of the Co, it organizes those of Prague (1925), Rome (1927), Paris (1928), Darmstadt (1930), Turin (1933), Budapest (1935), Paris (1937) and finally Monaco in (1939). Besides these last plays are held in parallel of another sporting international meeting coed gathering the students of the countries non-member of the Société of the nations (mainly Germany and Austria) and whose national associations coeds were not or more members of the Co.

The rebirth post-war period

It is necessary to await 1949 to see the creation of the FISU with Luxembourg by Dr. Paul Schleimer. The FISU is then in competition with the International union of the students which had organized the university worldwide games in 1949, little before the foundation of the FISU. Held until in 1957 with the only Western nations, the university tests open starting from this date with the countries of Eastern Europe then under Communist regime. This evolution is done under French influence. In 1959, FISU and RESULTING agree to take part together in the university Worldwide games organized in Italy. These plays are the first to bear the name of Universiade. The FISU takes then the control of Universiades and sets up university championships of the world.
