FINA is the International federation of Swimming, founded with London on July 19th 1908, on the initiative of the countries participating in the Olympiades of 1908: the Germany, the Belgium, Denmark, the Finland, the France, the Great Britain, the Hungary and the Sweden. It was created with an aim of harmonizing the rules of swimming and of organizing a world platform to organize the competitions.

Currently, 194 national federations are affiliated there.

Function

The FINA has as a role of:

  • to standardize the rules for the competitions of Swimming in swimming pool or interstitial waters, of Dive, synchronized Swimming and Water polo; to organize these competitions, on a world level and Olympic.

  • to ensure the control of the lately established records and to allow their follow-up.

  • Organization of the first world cups in 1979

  • Organization of the Grand Prix of dive in 1994
