History
The creation of a “international Day of the women” was proposed for the first time in 1910, at the time of the international 2èreconférence of the socialist women, by Clara Zetkin, and fitted then in a revolutionary prospect. As of 1911, demonstrations are organized in Austria-Hungary, with the Denmark, in Suisse, Germany, then the following years in France, with the Netherlands, in Russia and Sweden. The date is first of all not fixed, and it is only starting from 1917, with the strike of the workers of Saint-Pétersbourg, that the tradition of the March 8th is set up definitively. After 1945, the international Day of the women becomes a tradition in the whole world.
A legend wants that the origin of the March 8th goes up with a demonstration of American workers of the textile in 1857, event which actually never took place. It is surely about a wink of American feminists who, in the years 1950, want at the same time to integrate this day in the context states-unien and to pay a homage to Clara Zetkin, 1857 being his birth date. The origin of this day is anchored indeed in the workers' struggles and the many demonstrations of women claiming the Right to vote, of better work conditions and the equality between the men and the women, who agitated the Europe, at the beginning of the 20th century.
The international Day of the women is recognized officially by the the United Nations in 1977, and France in 1982.
