International day for the elimination of poverty

In 1992, the General meeting of UNO, being pleased that some governmental organizations, on the initiative on the one of them (the international movement DTA Fourth World, based in France), decided in many countries to make October 17th the world Journée of the refusal of misery , decided that this date would mark the international Journée for the elimination of poverty (resolution 47/196 of the December 22nd).

The initiative of DTA Fourth World

October 17th 1987, with the call of the father Joseph Wresinski, 100  000 people are gathered Place of Trocadéro to Paris to engrave there the following text in the marble of the Parvis of the human rights, là-même where was adopted, the December 10th 1948, the Universal declaration of the Human rights:

on October 17th, 1987 of the defenders of the Human rights And of the citizen of all countries gathered on this Square. They paid homage With the victims of the hunger, ignorance and violence, They affirmed their conviction that misery is not fatal. They proclaimed their solidarity with those which fight Throughout the world to destroy it. “Where men are condemned to live in misery; the human rights are violated. to link itself to make them respect is a sacred duty. ” Father Joseph Wresinski
