International association of sociology
The International association of Sociologie (BOARD) is an international regrouping of sociologists. This association is non-profit-making, its objective is to represent the sociologists of the whole world without regard to their disciplinary approaches or their ideologies. Association aims facilitating research sociologist and at increasing the international visibility of it.
The current seat of the BOARD is with the Université Complutense of Madrid in Spain. The current president of the BOARD is the French sociologist Michel Wieviorka. He succeeds inter alia the last presidents: Immanuel Wallerstein, Piotr Sztompka and Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
Constitution
The statutes of the International association of sociology were adopted during the constituting Congress of Oslo in Norway between the 5 and on September 11th, 1949. As of its beginning the BOARD was placed under the auspices of the UNESCO which recognizes to him a statute of member as non-governmental Organization (ONG). It is member of the International counsel of Social sciences and to an advisory statute near the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
Organization
The International association of sociology gathers committees of research, work groups, sets of themes groups as well as collective members. These various groups and committees organize in a decentralized way their congress, events, bulletin etc
Each committee of research holds its specificity of its specialization in a research field. These committees are known under abbreviation RC, for research committee in English. The active RC are 53.
Each work group holds its specificity of its attempt to carry out comparative and transnational research. The work groups are known under abbreviation WG, for working group in English. The WG credits are 3.
Each group set of themes holds its specificity of its attempt to carry out reflections on general and transverse sets of themes. The sets of themes groups are known under abbreviation TG, for thematic group in English. The active TG are 3.
The collective members are at the same time nearly fifty national associations, the dozen association regional, the most 70 associations, departments of sociology or other institutions which made the step be registered as collective members.
Languages
The official languages of the BOARD are English, French and Spanish. However, English is used in a prevalent way in the communication with the members. Certain regional associations hold in addition of the meetings at the time of the world congresses of the meetings in Russian, Japanese, Arabic, German, Chinese and ten of other languages.
World congress
Since 1962, the BOARD organizes every four years a world congress. The first five congresses (1950-1962) were given every three years. The committees of work, regional associations hold their annual conventions which coincide sometimes with the world congress.
