International airport of Sfax-Thyna
The international airport of Sfax-Thyna (rear RTL مطارصفاقسالدولي) (Code AITA: SFA , Code ICAO: DTTX ) serves Sfax and more generally all the area of the the Tunisian Sahel. Located at 6 kilometers in the south-west of Sfax, it is put in exploitation in 1980 and covers a Superficie of 327 Hectare S on the territory of the municipality of Thyna.
Also air base of the Tunisian Armed , the airport knew several extensions and installations of which most important remain the installation and the replanning of the air terminal in 1988, the reinforcement and the extension of the track in 1989, the construction of an air terminal for the freight in 1996, the startup of new infrastructures (hangar, taxiways, carpark for Avion S, etc), the rehabilitation and the reinforcement of the track and finally the construction of a news control tower and of a technical block. The airport treated 74.000 passengers in 2006.
From a capacity of 200.000 passengers per annum, current the air terminal extends on: 2000 m ². A new air terminal of: 8000 m ², made up of 3 buildings, are in construction since the November 8th 2005 and could open its doors with the current of second half of the year 2007. Of overall costs of 16 million dinars, it will have a capacity of reception of: 500000 passengers. An global envelope of 25 million dinars was in addition devoted to the airport to give him a blow of total face lift (control tower, tracks and air terminal).
Like all the Tunisian airports, the airport is managed by the Office of the civil aviation and the airports (OACA).
