International airport of Düsseldorf

The international airport of Düsseldorf (Code AITA: DUE ; Code ICAO: EDDL ) is located at 8 km in the north of Düsseldorf. Inaugurated the April 19th 1927, it serves today 180 destinations and accommodates 70 airline companies. Each day, approximately 500 planes take off or attérissent of the Aéroport and with more than 15 million travellers, it is, after the airports of Frankfurt and Munich, the third German airport.

History

  • 1927, the airport was open the April 19th, after two years of construction. However, the first plane to be unloaded in Düsseldorf was a Zeppelin the LZ-III in 1909.
  • 1950 : the principal track is prolonged to reach 2475 meters.
  • 1964 : planning starts for the construction of a new terminal, carrying the capacity with 1,4 million passengers.
  • 1969: the principal track is lengthened to reach 3000 meters.
  • 1972 : to decrease pollution by the noise, a law prohibits the flights of jets between 23:00 and 6:00. The traffic by plane of night was already interdict since 1970.
  • 1973: the new central building and the terminal B are open.
  • 1975 : the connection of railroad between the central station of Düsseldorf and the airport starts.
  • 1977 : the construction of the terminal has is accomplished.
  • 1986 : 8.22 million passengers employs the airport, it becomes thus the 2nd airport more attended of Germany. The terminal C is open.
  • 1992 : 12,3 million passengers employs the airport. Second a 2700 meters length track is built.
  • 1996, April 11th: a fire bursts on the roof of the terminal, probably caused by a welding. 17 people die, most of the time because of the inhalation of smoke, with, in much of casualties. It is estimated that the damage with the airport costs hundreds of million marks. During the fire, passengers are placed in large tents. In November, the terminal C is completely rebuilt, with three starting halls.
  • 1997 : construction starts on the new interurban station at the Eastern edge of the airport.
  • 1998 : the terminal rebuilt is reopened. The airport changes its name of “airport of the Rhine the Ruhr” into “international Düsseldorf”. The rebuilding of the building and the terminal B starts.
  • 1999 : Creation of an underground car park under the new terminal, as an element of the program “airport 2000+”
  • 2000: in May, the news” Gare of the airport of Düsseldorf “is opened, making it possible to daily carry the capacity to 300 departures of train. 16 million passengers employs the airport this year; Düsseldorf is the third larger airport in Germany.
  • 2001 : in March, the new starting halls and the terminal B are open after 2 years and half of construction.
  • 2002 : the service of bus of shuttle is replaced by a Monorail suspended called SkyTrain connects the building of the terminal Interurbain to the station of train. The monorail makes 2.5 kilometers length between the terminal and the station at a maximum speed of 50 km/h.   • 2006, November 12th: An Airbus has 380 unloads in Düsseldorf. The international airport of Düsseldorf in the past was used as important destination with the flights bound for the United States. After the September 11th, Continental Airlines and United Airlines stopped their flights on Düsseldorf; however, the uA continues to cooperate with the Lufthansa.
