International Wizard off OZ Club
International The Wizard off OZ Club, Inc., is a club founded in 1957 by Justin G. Schiller, then 13 years old. The fourteen founding members, of which some actively continued to take part in the club since, came from a mailing list found in papers of Jack Snow, deceased in July 1956. Schiller had on the occasion of dscuter with him on several occasions of work of Baum on the Pays of OZ.
Members
The organization counts today 1300 members throughout the world; its members are anglophone children learning how to read with the books on the country of OZ, or the adults responsible for the annual publications of the novels for Baum and Thompson. Its members include/understand readers of Baum as well as televiewers of the film the magician of OZ of Flemming (1939).Among the remarkable members (passed or present):
- Ray Bradbury, American novelist, author in particular of the Martian Chronic ,
- Martha Coolidge, scenario writer American,
- Rachel Cosgrove Pays,
- Margaret Hamilton, American, in particular known actress to have played the malicious witch of the West in film of Flemming (1939),
- Michael Patrick Hearn, American novelist, having written The Annotated Wizard off OZ,
- Eloise Jarvis McGraw, author of many books for children,
- Bronson Pinchot, organizer of the meetings in the Seventies,
- Edward Wagenknecht, teaching American, and critical arts person,
- Meinhardt Raabe, one of the Munchkin actors in film of Flemming,
- Fred Mr. Meyer, a founding member, during several years secretary of the club.
Action
Publications
The principal publication of the club is the newspaper The Baum Bungle , whose first publication was launched in June 1957 by Schiller which duplicated the numbers on the Miméographe of his/her parents. The newspaper comprises primarily articles on the authors of the books on the country of OZ, of the critical analyzes on the characters, and of information of topicality in relation to OZ. It currently appears three times per year, and was recognized since 1983 like school Journal by the Modern Language Association. In 2005, pas winter less than 144 numbers appeared since its launching. Moreover, the number of pages of a number doubled.The club also published many rare books of Baum, of which Animal Fairy Tales , Aunt Jane' S Nieces , and Twinkle and Chubbins . It also published two novels on the country of OZ written by Ruth Plumly Thompson, and those written by Rachel Cosgrove T by the duet Eloise Jarvis McGraw and Lauren Lynn McGraw. In 2000, it appeared its first book on the country of OZ not connected to the original work of Baum: The Hidden Prince off OZ of Gina Wickwar, illustrated by Cool Anna-Maria.
Meetings
The members of the club organize usually three meetings each year in the United States, called in reference to the places of the country of OZ:- the meeting Munchkin (east), which takes place with Princeton,
- the meeting Winkie (west), which takes place with Pacific Grove in California,
- the Ozmopolitan meeting (central), which takes place in Illinois.
- South Winkie, initially called Yips but name was rejected after a meeting under this name,
- Quadling,
- Gillikin or Ozcanabans, recontre in the house of Fred Mr. Meyer, and restoring in Escanaba, Michigan.
