International Union off Biological Sciences

The International Union off Biological Sciences or International union of biological sciences is a non-governmental and non-profit-making Organization, created in 1919 of which the goals are:

  • To promote the study of biology.
  • To organize and coordinate interdisciplinary and international research.
  • To ensure the diffusion of the result of its research.
  • Organisaer of the International Conferences and to publish the result of their work.

The members of the IUBS gathers 44 ordinary members, made up of member of the Academies of Science or national scientific organizations, and 80 scientific members, made up members various other organizations like learned societies. The IUBS organizes every three years a general meeting. This one, and according to the recommendations of a scientific committee of programming, chooses to support foreground programs. The institution publishes four times per annum Biology International as well as other publications like IUBS Monograph Series , the Methodology Manual Series and the Proceedings off the IUBS General Assemblies .

The financing is ensured by contributions paid by the ordinary members, of the financings coming from UNESCO and other international scientific institutions.

Short history

The IUBS is created in 1919 following work of the Conference of the interallied scientific Academies which is taken place with Brussels. After having defined its statutes and its organization in 1925, the IUBS adheres to the International Research Council , International counsel for science). known today under acronym ICSU for International Council off Scientific Unions .

Of 1925 with 1939, the IUBS works on two main themes: the scientific information and environment. This second project leads to the creation of World Conservation Union or IUCN. After having been in sleep of 1935 with 1949, the IUCB develops a very original international research program. Today, the organization works on various projects: Diversitas, Biosystematics, Species 2000, Bionomenclature…
