International English Language Testing System

IELTS ( International English Language Testing System or System of Evaluation in International English language ) is a test of control of the English language managed jointly by the Université of Cambridge, the British Council and the Australian organization IDP Education Australia. It is a true alternative to the standardized English test who is TOEFL.

The IELTS is accepted by the majority of the universities in the United States (more than 900 in Nov. 2006), the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, educational establishments offering of the international qualifications in English (Europe, Asia) and like by various professional organizations.

Characteristics of the IELTS

The IELTS shows the following characteristics:
  • the materials of examination present various accents and styles of writing to minimize linguistic and cultural skews. The test concentrates on “international English”, which include/understand the British English, the American English and other varieties. TOEFL, as for him, concerns only North-American English. Some, especially apart from the United States, thus consider that the results of the IELTS are more reliable. Duke University in the United States prefers it even with the TOEFL (cf site of Duke University).
  • the IELTS tests the capacities with speaking, reading, to listen and write of English.
  • for each of four competences above, the score is expressed by a value ranging between 1 (" Not utilisateur") and 9 (" User expert").
  • the candidates can choose the academic module or the module of general drive:
    • the academic module is intended for those of them which wish to fall under universities or other establishments of higher education.
    • the module of general drive is intended for those which want to undertake another formation or which pass the test with a professional aim or to immigrate in an anglophone country (the IELTS is required by Canada and Australia).

Criticisms

Like TOEFL (see TOEFL#Critiques), the IELTS can be criticized by those which estimate that a standardized test cannot suitably evaluate the control of a foreign language. However, the IELTS, produced by University off Cambridge ESOL, world leader of the evaluation of the English language, profits from a professional expertise which is not any more to show. necessary reference
