International Emmaüs

History

Emmaüs International is a Association created in Bern (Swiss federal Palate) in 1969. The first General meeting, chaired by Marcel Flour, then President of Emmaüs-Switzerland, adopted a Proclamation of Emmaüs and set up an international Secretariat. The statutes of the organization were adopted by the General meeting of Montreal, in 1971.

Before the creation of this association, communities existed already, in particular in Europe (mainly in France) and in Latin America. However, the Pierre abbot was the only bond between all. After the shipwreck of the Pierre abbot in Rio del Plata, the persons in charge of the movement have fears to see disappearing this single bond, which could have led to the disappearance of the movement. They become aware of the need for structuring the movement to establish the link between the groups, from where the creation of International Emmaüs

It is starting from the assembly general of Vérone, in 1988, qu ' Emmaüs International takes a true political dimension and is not only any more one body of coordination. This Parliament will see the arrival with the presidency of Italian Franco Bettoli. There will remain president d' Emmaüs International until 1999. It will then be replaced by another Italian, Renzo Fior, president to AG of Sarajevo in 2007.

Emmaüs International is made up of 327 attending members groups in 40 countries, which meet as a General meeting every four years (the last one took place in Sarajevo from October 8th to 13rd 2007, the preceding one with Ouagadougou in 2003). On this occasion, they determine the orientations of work and the priorities to next Assemblée, elect the president, adopt the reports/ratios moral and of activity, examine the financial accounts…

International Emmaüs today

The Emmaüs groups since 2004 are organized in four areas (Europe, Africa, Americas, Asia). They are represented within the Board of directors by the Advisers of Emmaüs International (CEI), elected during Assemblés Regional of the Movement. The Board of directors is in particular charged to implement the orientations, proposals, decisions voted at the general meeting, to animate and coordinate the reflection in favor of the fight for the rights of poorest throughout the world, to organize the policy of communication of Emmaüs International towards the general public and the political powers, to coordinate the actions of solidarity and the resource sharing between all the organizations members of Emmaüs International, to pass from alliances with other organizations sharing the same goal for, with them, to fight against the misery and the causes of misery everywhere where it is…

The Executive committee, composed in 2007 of President (Jean Rousseau, elected at the time of AG of Sarajevo the defects presidents being Patrick Atohoun and Birgitta Goranson) and of the members elected within the Board of directors, is in charge of the current management of the businesses of Emmaüs International, on mandate given by the Board of directors.

The international Secretariat of Emmaüs, placed under the authority of the Executive committee and the responsibility for an acting general (Alain Fontaine), has as main missions international animation, the secretariat of solidarity, the communication and the general administration.

Today, the five top priority of the international movement on the scale are:

  • the access to the drinking water (Nokoué project)
  • right of migrant worker (countryside for the ratification of convention UNO)
  • ethical finance (with Banca Etica)
  • the mutual insurance company Health Africa
  • the mutual insurance company Education America
