International CFM CFM56

CFM International CFM56 is the name of a series of Turboréacteur S atstrong ratio by-pass manufactured by CFM International and of a power of 82 kN to 151 kN.

It is today the range of reaction engines the most sold with the world with more than 15.000 specimens in service equipping 6000 planes more.

It equips with many different planes: McDonnell Douglas DC-8, Boeing C-135, Boeing 737, Airbus A318/319/320/321 and Airbus A340

History

Birth

The CFM56 is from the engine General Electric F101 intended for the strategic bomber Rockwell B-1 Lancer.

Within International CFM, GE Aircraft Engines is in charge of the high pressure part of the engine, also called core (compressing high pressure, combustion chamber and turbine high pressure) and Snecma of the low part pressure (the blower or fan, low pressure compressor and low pressure turbine) as well as accessories and exhaust nozzle.

Each company has its own line of assembly and thus produces complete engines. Name CFM56 is not a Acronyme, it is a wink with the names of the most important engines that General Electric manufactured (the CF6) and the SNECMA (M5) at the time of the launching of the project.

CFM56-2

It is the first version of the engine which was designed for remotoriser the McDonnell Douglas DC-8.

It was a success and the CFM56-2 was also selected for remotoriser the planes of the family Boeing C-135 (the majority are supply craft).

Approximately 1800 CFM56-2 were produced, of a power which goes from 98 to 108 kN.

CFM56-3

After the success of the CFM56-2 on the market of the modernization of old planes, the CFM56-3 will devote the success while being chosen by Boeing like exclusive motorization for its new range of Boeing 737, Boeing 737-300, 400 and 500, also called Boeing 737 Classic .

More than 4500 CFM56-3 were built since its certification in 1984, which makes of it the engine most largely produced of all the history of aviation in a range of power from 82 to 105 kN

The Boeing 737 having been conceived at the base with an engine of smaller diameter, it was necessary to reduce the height of the engine so that it does not rub by ground. The engineers were thus obliged to locate the case of accessories on the side of the engine what gives this characteristic aspect to the nacelle. So one calls sometimes affectionately the Boeing 737 testicles punts ”.

CFM56-5A and CFM56-5B

On the impetus of the preceding model, the CFM-56-5A was conceived for the large rival of the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320.

The CFM56-5A was certified in 1987, and is available in powers from 98 to 118 kN. It is also the first model of CFM56 to lay out of a system of electronic regulation full authority (FADEC).

The CFM56-5A will also equip the Airbus A319 at its exit in 1996.

The CFM56-5B is an evolution of the CFM56-5A which enters in service in 1994 and equips all the range with the Airbus A318, A319, A320 and A321. It is available in a range of power from 98 to 142,50 kN.

Contrary to Boeing 737 where it is the only possible motorization, the CFM56-5A and CFM56-5B are in competition with the International Aero Engines V2500 (A319, A320 and A321) like with the Pratt & Whitney PW6000 (A318) and equip approximately 60% with the planes of a320 family. More than 2500 specimens were produced to date.

CFM56-5C

After success on the twin-jet aircrafts short and average couriers of the previous models, the CFM56-5C conceived for the Airbus A340 mark a long return to the four-jet aircrafts mails.

The CFM56-5C equips of exclusiveness the versions A340-200 and A340-300 and has powers ranging between 139 and 151 kN.

For the CFM56-5C, CFM International provides an especially optimized complete unit including/understanding the engine, the nacelle and the exhaust nozzle.

The choice of a so small engine on a plane of the size of the Airbus A340 can appear surprising and certain malicious gossip calls it “ the plane with the four hair driers ” and even claims that its rate of rise is so weak that it takes off only because the ground is round!

For the versions A340-500 and A340-600, the CFM56 will not be rather any more powerful, and Airbus will have recourse to four Rolls-Royce the Trent 500 of a size proportioned better with the plane.

CFM56-7B

The CFM56-7B is the engine which equips of exclusiveness the last evolutions in the Boeing 737, B737-600 the versions, 700,800 and 900 known as Boeing 737 NG for new generation.

It was certified in 1996, has last technological advances and is available in powers from 87 to 121 kN
