Intercontinental Cut

The intercontinental Coupe was an annual competition of Football organized by UEFA and CONMEBOL and opposed the winners of the Ligue of the Champions to that of the Copa Libertadores in a match which proceeded with Tokyo in December.

From 2005, the intercontinental Cut was replaced by the World cup of the clubs of the FIFA, which had already been held in 2000.

History

The intercontinental Cut was created in 1960. It was held at the origin in matches return ticket. Until 1968, the Cut was allotted only to the points. It thus did not matter the number of marked goals. This is why certain editions ended in a match of stopping.

After certain meetings had ended in brawls, several European champions refused to take part in it and left the place to the finalist of the Ligue of the Champions. The Atlético of Madrid thus gained the intercontinental Cut in 1974 without to have gained the Coupe of the clubs European champions preceding. In 1975 and 1978, the intercontinental Cut was not even disputed.

Since 1980, the intercontinental Cut is sponsored by Toyota and is played in only one match with the national Stade of athletics of Kasumigaoka to Tokyo of 1981 with 2001 then with the Yokohama International Stadium with Yokohama since 2002.

The Italian Alessandro Costacurta took part in it in five recoveries… but no player succeeded in twice gaining it more during all his career.

Since 2004, it was replaced by the World cup of the clubs.
