Interallied memorial
The Interallied Memorial is a memorial built after First World War. The memorial exists Church of the Sacred Heart like religious building and a tower like civil monument.
Liege, as a first city to be itself effectively opposite to the invaders in 1914, was selected in 1925 by the International federation of the War veterans like place of construction of an interallied monument, financed by subscriptions public and deprived in the allied countries. Its design was entrusted to the Architect Antwerp ois Joseph Smolderen, and work which began in September 1928 on the hill from Cointe, stopped, unfinished, in 1935. The religious building, the first, was blessed and devoted to the Sacred Heart in 1936. With the monument the Notre-Dame church with the Sacred Heart is also associated the civil monument, to him, was inaugurated the July 20th 1937 in the presence of its Majesty the King Léopold III. the Belgian State, become owner of the tower in 1949 made there carry out in 1962 work of restoration, the site having been touched hard by the air raids of the Second world war, and which were completed in 1968, year when the November 20th, the King Baudouin Ier proceeded to a news and second inauguration.
Since 1985, the tower and the church are opened with the public, but only on certain occasions (like the weekend of the Pentecost or the days of the inheritance).
The church shelters treasures to be discovered of which statues of two Saints: Saint-Maur and Saint-Death which is the honoured Saint with Cointe.
The civil memorial counts, in its enclosure, several monuments offered to Liege by the allied Nations; 7 countries are currently represented: the Italy, the France, the Romania, the Spain, the Greece, the Great Britain, the Poland and the Russia. These monuments are located the ones outside (on the esplanade), the others inside the votive tower (in its crypt and its rooms low and high).
The site of Cointe is single in Belgium since, to only associate civil and religious in the same recognition, it represents a symbol of the collective homage of all the allies of 1914 - 1918 to Belgium.
The Control of the Building industries (federal organization) will carry out the restoration at the same time interior and external of the site as from spring 2007.
