Inter-war period
The inter-war period recovers the period (1918 - 1939) ranging between the Première and the Second world war. These twenty years of peace were remembered by a durable upheaval of the international power struggles, by the emergence of the totalitarian ideologies like by considerable technological advances. This period constitutes a coherent and homogeneous unit which it is advisable to apprehend in its globality. First half of the period was called the Mad years primarily for the ruptures in the social behavior (transgressive artistic esthetic news, development of transport, as individual private individuals, modification of the codes of behavior, in particular at the women of the higher and average classes). As from 1929, the social economic crisis and the rise of aggressive official nationalisms create an atmosphere of tension and fear.
Mad years… with the crisis

The years 1920

The the Twenties open in the pain. The general payment of the world war poses many problems. Europe, as a whole very weakened, sorrow to be recovered from its wounds. The assessment is dramatic on the human plan and material whereas a new international power struggle is born. A new chart of the continent emerges which creates new tensions. The calm one in the final analysis returns only in the middle of the decade. After 1925, it is indeed advent the one new era - that of the Collective security - which seems to be essential on the world: SDN, after some difficult beginnings, finds its marks whereas the Accords of Locarno regulate the Franco-German reports/ratios as well as possible. Optimism is general and the economic revival appears solid after the vexations that knew the economic conjuncture of the immediate post-war period. The Crise of 1929 will awake partially of the tensions still sharp which will nothing but do be exacerbated.
The years 1930
See also: Years 1930
The the Thirties appear in our contemporary eyes like the negative one of the previous decade. The Mad years had actually seen the world joining again with peace and a certain economic prosperity. These last conclude by a economic crisis from a world width whose principal consequence will be the exacerbation of competition between the nations: the economic competitions open the door with older political resentments, often besides born of the payment at short sight of the First World War.
The Années 1930 also see the return of the Nationalismes, as well in Europe, as in South America or Asia as well as a development without precedent of the Idéologie S totalitarian, as they are of right-hand side (Fascisme, Nazisme) or of left (Stalinisme). Hitler manages to obtain the full powerss Reichstag in 1933. It gradually imposes its Dictature on the Germany (Gleichschaltung). It engages the country in a policy deliberately Raciste and Antisémite, and proceeds to a massive rearmament. Conflicts of world scale, putting at the catches great powers, announce the worst (Conquest of the Mandchourie by the Japan in 1931, invasion of Abyssinie by Italy in 1935, Spanish Civil war in 1936, etc) whereas the Société of the Nations, charged to guarantee the world Paix, in the final analysis proves impotent.
The Années 1930 are also the witnesses of a formidable intellectual, artistic dash and technique which sees to accelerate a true revival Culturel and to develop the Cinéma, the radio, the Aéronautique and the Automobile. These years of extreme tensions seem to announce our current companies, remembered by the speed of the Communication S, the pregnancy of the Idéologie S and the Consommation of mass.
