Inter-University library of the Eastern languages

The inter-University Library of the Eastern Language S , (at one time Library of the School of the Eastern languages ) is historically related to the National institute of the languages and civilizations Eastern. It of it is currently independent and has an inter-University statute, while being attached to the Université of Paris III (Sorbonne Nouvelle). Its seat is located at the 4, Rue of Lille in the 7th district of Paris (beside the INALCO).

Collections

Its collections recover at the same time a vast geographical surface (Proche and the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Oceania, Central and Eastern Europe) and broad fields of the social sciences, to start with the Linguistique, the literature, the Ethnologie, but also political sciences, the history, geography.

It gathers some 550.000 volumes and 9.600 titles of periodicals (alive or dead), in addition to 100 languages, sometimes absent from any other library in France of which important the funds Ourdou, single, or collections given by Georges Dumézil.

One counts in particular approximately 130.000 old, rare or invaluable documents of XIVe at the XIXe century, with Incunable S and Unica.

One can raise the collections of Xylographie S and Estampe S Japanese women, of the Arab and Persan works, the funds Turkish and exceptional Korea NS in Europe

Manuscripts (Arab, Turkish, Hebraic, Persan, Chinese bundles) also deserve the attention.

The contemporary works are not neglected: the collections means-Eastern, Chinese, Japanese, Slavic, of South Asia and South-east and the collections in Western languages make it possible more largely to apprehend the whole of the geographical areas and civilizations which they recover.

Since 1994, the inter-University library of the Eastern Languages is the seat of the “Pole associated with the Eastern Languages” of the National library of France (for the Hindi, the Ourdou, the Bengali , the Tamoul, the Indonésien, the Thai , the Burmese , the Tibetan) what testifies to the scarcity and the quality of its funds.

Enrichment continues regularly with purchases, gifts, exchanges. One of the main issues is related to the conditions of storage and access to the titles which are not preserved any more in the places of consultation (street of Lille, Dauphine, Clichy). The regrouping of the collections within the College library of the languages and civilizations will make it possible to solve this difficulty.
