the name of the commune Gast comes doubtless from the Toponyme of former French gast , indicating a waste land. This name being probably due to the " boules" of granite which emergent in the fields. Thus, according to other sources the name of the commune would mean Pays where the Granite emerges.

Geography

The commune of Gast is surrounded in north by the communes of Fontenermont and Saint-Sever-Apple-brandy, in the east by the commune of Field-of-Boult the, the west by the commune of Coulouvray-Boisbenâtre, and in the South by the communes of Saint-Pea and Saint-Michel-with-Montjoie. The territory of the commune is located at the limit between the Calvados and the Manche, two departments of the area Basse-Normandie.
The commune is crossed by the river His , whose water is pumped downstream from the reserve of Gast ( Barrage of Gast ).

History

In 1790, during the revolutionary period, Gast belongs to the canton of Saint-Sever, district of Vire, Département of the Apple-brandy.
In 1794, the commune of Gast names Gust and acquires its current denomination in 1801 (Bulletins of the laws).

Remarkable monuments and sites

The village lays out of a church of Romance Style, made up of a furnace bridge and a Baldaquin of the XVIIe century, of a Retable with a Bas-relief representing the Holy Family XVIIe century and of a stone bishop-reliquary of the XVe/XVIe century.

The commune of Gast is located near the National forest of Saint-Sever, from which a part extends on the territory from the commune (wood present on the commune of Gast belong for the majority to private owners).

The village also shelters in the forest a Dolmen with the particular form on the site known as of Pierre Coupée .
The stone of Gast, a broken blue granite of 300 tons, would be heaviest of the Dolmen S of the Neolithic (towards -2500). However, it is not proven that it is really about a dolmen (i.e. resulting from an human activity), because he seems more probable than he was worked by the erosion.

Because of its proximity with the National forest of Saint-Sever, the commune of Gast has a water reserve sheltering a small ornithological reserve . The visible species of birds are the Fuligule pochard, the castagneux Grèbe, the Grand cormorant, the ashy Héron, the Foulque macroule, the Gallinule hen of water, the Fuligule tufted duck, the Bécassine of the marshes, the crested Grèbe, the Sarcelle of winter, the Chevalier guignette and the Canard mallard.
