Institute reports of the contemporary edition

Created in 1988 on the initiative of researchers and professionals of the edition, the Institut Reports of the contemporary edition (IMEC) gathers funds of files and studies devoted to the principal publishers, the reviews and the various actors of the life of the book and writing of the 20th century: editors, writers, historians, philosophers, critics, translators, graphic designers, booksellers, printers, revuists, journalists, directors literary

Association law 1901, created starting from an private initiative, chaired successively by the directors of the large French publishers, the IMEC is supported by the ministry for the Culture (direction of the Book and the Reading) and the District council of Basse-Normandie.

Since 1995, the IMEC undertook the transfer of its funds of files in the Abbaye of Ardenne located at Saint-Germain-the-White-Grass in the Calvados (Basse-Normandie). This abbey strongly damaged in 1944 was restored by the District council of Basse-Normandie and was arranged to shelter a Bibliothèque of 80.000 works, rooms of filing in basement representing more than 15 km of linear, while the great reconstituted nave 24 hours a day shelters the room of consultation open to the researchers.

Its annual Budget of operation, which rises to 2,9 million euros is subsidized by the area of Basse-Normandie to a total value of 1,1 million.

Disputed by many professionals of the files - in particular by the conservatives of the inheritance - who regret an imperfect professionalism and the precariousness of collections resting on the deposit, and not on the property, criticized by certain anthropologists of the inheritance who see a " there; business of famille" , the creation of a segregative memory of a world of the writers which refuses the assimilation in the inheritance of the nation, this institution has however the great merit to place at the disposal of researchers - and under good conditions - files which without it would be, in many cases, on the market, in particular collections.
