Institute off Economic Affairs
The Institute off Economic Affairs ( IEA , in French: Institute of the Economic affairs) is most important Think-tank the United Kingdom for the free Marché, founded in 1955. Its mission is to improve comprehension of the fundamental institutions of an free society by analyzing and exposing the role of the Marché S in the resolution of the economic and social problems.
The IEA achieves its objective by:
- a program of top-of-the-range publications written by famous economists (several “Nobel Prize” of economy)
- of the conferences, seminars and speech
- of the actions to reach the students of university and school
- mediatization of its ideas
- and other activities
The fundamental belief of the partisans of the free-market east who people should be free to do what they want in the life as long as they do not harm anybody of other. As a whole, the problems and the challenges of the company are managed better by people and companies which interact freely without interference of the politicians and the State. This means that the action of the government, that it is through the Impôt S, the Payment S or the Loi S, should be maintained at least. The authors and the speakers of the IEA are thus always in the search in manners of reducing the role of the government in our lives.
History
The history of the IEA starts with Antony Fisher and its reading in April 1945 of the summary of the Road of the constraint of Friedrich Hayek]] published by the Reader' S Digest . Fisher went to meet the same Hayek year off with the London School Economics, informing him of its wish to begin a political career. Hayek dissuaded some, proposing in the place the creation of an research organization in favor of the open market and which would make it possible to fight against the influence of the Socialisme and of the Planisme among British intellectuals. If the intellectuals and the company were convinced of the benefits of the market, then the politicians would follow.In June 1955, Anthony Fisher signs the foreword of the convertibility of the pound sterling by George Winder in the capacity as " director of the IEA. In November of the same year, the founding document of the IEA is signed by Fisher, John Harding and Oliver Smedley. Ralph Harris joined the IEA in the capacity as managing director as from January 1957. Arthur Seldon joined in 1958 the IEA and becomes about it in 1958 to advise leading then directing leading article in 1959. Seldon launched a series of studies bound for the economists to present liberal lighting on the questions of the day. They became the Hobart Papers and 154 had been published in August 2006 in addition to 32 pounds of the same collection and tens of others.
October 1980 sees off the first publication of the Journal Economic Affairs , still published today. The publications of the IEA from now on are sold in the whole world and translated in addition to 25 languages. The institute has subscribers in more than 55 countries and sells its publications in more than 65. Many titles are obligatory besides in the university lists of supplies.
The IEA also helped of many institutions similar to essaimer all over the world. A hundred institutes in more than 80 countries thus was born. All are independent but share the same goals
Many ideas defended by the IEA initially were very discussed then accepted thanks to the work of the IEA: Abolition of the exchange control, independence of the central bank, etc more generally, the authors of the IEA inspired the policies of reduction of inflation, reform of the trade unions or privatization. Currently, the IEA works on the problems of regulation, reform of the public services, etc
It is currently directed by John Blundell.
Financing
The IEA is a educational and research charity . For this reason it is exclusively financed by gifts of private individuals, companies or foundations and by the product of the sale of its works or its conferences. He refuses any public money and wants to be independent of any political party or trade union
Publications
The research activities of the IEA are framed by a scientific advice (Composition Ci below) and by honorary members, among whom several Nobel Prize. Taking again the procedures of selection of the academic newspapers, each publication of the IEA is evaluated anonyment by the member of the scientific advice.Ten of the members of the IEA gained the “Nobel Prize” of economy: Gary Becker, James Mr. Buchanan, Ronald Coase, Milton Friedman, Friedrich Hayek, John Hicks, James Meade, Douglas C. North, Vernon L. Smith and George Stigler. The IEA republished the shortened version of the Road of the constraint of Friedrich Hayek while works of the “Nobel Prize” of economy were reprinted in the Road of economic freedom with a foreword of Margaret Thatcher.
