Institute of tropical medicines of the department of health of the armies

Founded with Marseilles in 1905, the Institute of Tropical Medicine of the Department of health of the Armies , more known under the name of the “School of Pharo”, is the only military institute in Europe specialized in the field of tropical medicine. September 16th, 2005, the School of Pharo celebrated its centenary.

It has 3 missions:

  • a mission of training in tropical medicine, doctors, pharmacists, male nurses and technicians of laboratory, soldiers and civilians,
  • a mission of research on the tropical diseases (Paludism, Meningitis cérébro-spinale and Arbovirose S),
  • an epidemiologic surveillance mission for the French Armies.

It organizes every year, with the military hospital of Marseilles (HIA Laveran), of the days of Tropical Medicine, the current events of Pharo.
