Institute of the high studies of the social communications

The Institute of the high studies of the social communications ( IHECS ), established in the center of Brussels, proposes studies in the form of baccalaureat S and Master S in Journalisme, Public relations, Publicité, Animation and education.

The IHECS is an establishment of social higher education of long type and university level pertaining to the free network subsidized by the French Communauté of Belgium.

The activity of the establishment is not limited to the masters; there exist also specializations or third cycles. The Institute proposes, indeed, a Post-graduate advanced degree Specialized (DESS) in economic and financial Information, European Journalisme, European Communication and Businesses, Communication and Development like in strategic and commercial Communication.

Courses

Each year of study in Ihecs articulates, in variable and adapted proportions:

of the general courses
of the courses of expressions and communication oral and written
of the courses of media
of the courses specific, sometimes obligatory, sometimes optional, on special matters of communication

General courses (Philosophy; Psychology; Sociology; History; economy; Right; Literary forms, forms plastic and musical; Linguistic…), it is obviously the intellectual and university base of the formation, which makes the big part with the social sciences, while being warned of the big role that the " littéraires" - and more largely humanistic - have to play in the company of tomorrow. But this base very quickly becomes specific. One gives to it from the start the intellectual problems most current and his context, the various ways of solution, with the advantages and the disadvantages of each one, and always of the sufficiently concrete applications so that the charm of reality is felt, and rather general so that one measures the universality of it.

It is accordingly that the student will start, as of the first year of Master, its report of end of studies (known as " memory théorique"). It is about a written individual work, by which he poses and solves, at least partially, a current problem of social communication applied.

The courses of expressions and written or oral communication constitute a drive supported to handle the feather and the verb, in French, English, Dutch or German. These aptitudes, however traditional in our cultures, are, says one, in suffering a little everywhere today and are the subject consequently of an special attention.

Then, courses of media, i.e. means of expression other than the word and the writing. Even if the formation does not plan a priori to make of the student a technician of the image and sound, this one knows nevertheless the language of these media and in control personally the use.

The first year constitutes a phase of initiation to these languages, centered mainly on the analysis of professional media documents and the use of the concepts suitable for each one of them. This first approach in rather theoretical matter, doubles, in second baccalaureat, of a practical training through the realization of work, generally in groups (examples: multi-media realization, radiophonic adaptation of a work of fiction; exercise of face-camera; microphone-pavement…)

The knowledge of the various media and their tools will allow the student, according to the specialization which he chooses in second cycle, as well as possible to apply the resources of each medium to the situations and concrete needs met in the professional life. Its competence will be expressed mainly through the " memory médiatique" who is a personal work presented in last year and who must allow the student to show at the same time his technical control of the media, and of its capacity to transmit, by these media, a message to a given public.

Lastly, the specific courses, in baccalaureat, are centered on questions or current problems of communication, company or culture, and in masters, on professional training specific to each section. The list of the courses, sometimes obligatory, sometimes optional, makes it possible to Ihecs to always bring up to date its program according to the evolution of the profession and the new stakes of the communication: today the numerical one, the multi-media one, highways of information…

Others

In 2007, Ihecs joins nine university campuses for the organization of the fifth edition of Southern Full Campus, centered around the topic " the migrations ".
