Institute of technology

A institute of technology or polytechnic school is a high level education institution specialized in the training of the techniques. The polytechnic term comes from the Greek πολύ (much) and τεχνικός (arts).

These schools exist at least since the 18th century but become increasingly widespread after the Second world war. The schools are generally schools of engineers or institutes technological. More rarely they are also a university (the such MIT or the ETH of Zurich), they then have the possibility of decreeing the diplomas of Master or doctorate and are also an entity of independent research.

The term institute of technology is used in much country (for example British Columbia Institute off Technology in Canada).
