Institute of studies occitanes
The Institut of studies occitanes ( Institute of Estudis Occitans in Occitan, or IEO ) is an association law of 1901 created in 1945 by young writers resulting from Resistance. It is a religious organization the purpose of which is the maintenance and the development of the Langue and the Culture occitanes by the direction, the harmonization and the standardization of all work which relates to the culture occitane as a whole.
Association was recognized of public utility in 1949 and was approved Jeunesse and popular education since 1986.
The IEO is organized in sectors: edition (IDECO), animation, music, visual arts, linguistics. It constitutes a federation of regional sections (the Limousin, Aquitaine, Languedoc, the Midday-Pyrenees and Provence) and secondary roads (about thirty departments of the great southern third of France). There exists also a IEO in the Vallées Occitanes of Italy, with the Val of Aran in Spain and with Paris.
The national IEO publishes a review, Occitans! , which, by its pulling, is one of the most important reviews in language occitane.
Controversies
The IEO had to suffer from a certain number of crises since its creation. Acutest, at the end of the Years 1970 and at the beginning of the Years 1980, lives to clash two tendances : the “populist” tendency to capacity, and the “university” tendency carried out by Robert Lafont. In 1981, the “university” tendency, with Robert Lafont, was obliged to leave the IEO. That involved the scientific disappearance of the research activities within association, and their transfer towards other organizations like the universities, the International association of studies occitanes and, in particular in Linguistique, towards the Gidiloc (Group of initiative for a computerized dictionary of the language occitane) and the Conseil of the language occitane. However, the IEO preserves still today a crucial role in the field of the cultural activity(AP), as well as the respect of a great number of militants of the culture occitane.
