Institute of astrophysics of Paris
The Institute of astrophysics of Paris (IAP), is a research laboratory of the National center of the scientific research (CNRS), attached to the Université Pierre and Marie Curie since 2001. It is located boulevard Arago, in the 14 {{E}} district of Paris, near the Observatoire of Paris, from which it does not form however part.
History
The creation of the IAP is decided in 1936 by the Minister for State education Jean Zay, initially in order to carry out the data processing collected by the Observatoire of High-Provence builds at the same time. The laboratory, initially called “Laboratory of astrophysics” opens its doors the June 15th 1939. Henri Mineur is the first director. Its buildings are initially located within the observatory of Paris, then in those of the National university of Paris before taking their final place in the current building whose construction is completed in 1952.
Current research
The IAP counts 160 Enquiring S, Engineer S, Technicien S, administrative and doctorands, and regularly accommodates many trainees and foreign visitors.
The principal sets of themes studied at the institute of astrophysics of Paris are:
-
great statements and Formation of the great structures
- Astrophysical Cosmology and of high energies
-
Origin and evolution of the Galaxy S
-
Physical stellar
-
solar Planets extra
The IAP is one of the five laboratories of the European Groupement of research for the astronomy (AIRED), of which it is one of the founders. The laboratory is located at the interface between two disciplines, Astrophysique and Theoretical physics. It is also very active on the level of the massive treatment of Donnée S since the installation of a technical platform “POLARIS” (Astrophysical Pole of Research in data processing and Digital simulation). It hébege in particular the center of the treatment of the Given S of the camera MegaCam established with the telescope Canada-France-Hawaii (project TERAPIX) and will proceed to part of the treatment of the Donnée S of the satellite Planck Surveyor. the IAP also lodges the seat of the international astronomical Union.
