Innocent Ier
Innocent 1st , pope of 402 with 417.
It succeeds, according to Jerome, with his own father, Anastase {{Ier}} the December 22nd 402. Originating undoubtedly in Albano in the Latium, one knows his youths little. On the other hand, its pontificate remains one of most important of this tragic period where the Roman Empire is in the moment of living its last years in Occident.
The disaster of the catch of Rome by Alaric {{Ier}} the August 24th 410, per hour even where with Ravenne the pope discusses with the emperor Honorius opportunity of making of the chief Visigoth the commander of the imperial forces, is a catch seems it for Innocent. It is clear that time is completed where the Church puts up with a compartmental government where each bishop is completely responsible for his diocese without returning of account to Rome. For Innocent only a strong authority, authority which is not ensured any more by the empire, can guarantee the safety of the Church. This tendency already started by its predecessors, Anastase {{Ier}} and especially Sirice, will be accentuated under the pontificate of Innocent 1st at a point ever reached until these dark days. It consolidates the authority of the Pope, reinforces the bonds with the bishops of Occident (Carthage, Tarragone, etc) but also of the East (Thessalonique) and requires that the problems of doctrines be discussed in Rome. He condemns thus vigorously the Pélagianisme by approving work of the Concile of Carthage into 416.
Its relations with the court of Constantinople and the patriarch are fluctuating. He refuses a division of the authority with the patriarch but maintains good relationships with Jean Chrysostome for which he intervenes in vain when in 403 this one is exiled first once by the intrigues of the empress Eudoxie.
He dies the March 12th 417.
